As a business within Maersk Group, MLL combines experience, maritime expertise and global intermodal capability. In 1983, MLL won its first government contract to convert and operate five military prepositioning ships. Since then, we have managed and operated over 110 vessels of varying types and sizes. With the largest U.S. flag fleet in commercial service, we employ approximately 5,000 U.S. mariners annually and work with all the major U.S. maritime unions.
Maersk Line, the global containerized division of the A.P. Moller – Maersk Group, is dedicated to delivering the highest level of customer-focused and reliable ocean transportation services. Our vision, built from a strong heritage of uprightness, constant care, and innovation, has guided our business operations since the first Maersk Line vessel sailed in 1904. By remaining committed to that vision we have expanded our business to become the world’s largest ocean carrier. And we are consistently recognized as the most reliable container shipping company. Soon after Germany invaded Denmark during World War II, Mr. Maersk Mc-Kinney Moeller relocated to New York to lead Maersk operations. Later, he set up a legal entity in the U.S. in case he had to flee Denmark once again. In 1947, after the war ended, he created an American corporation based in Delaware known as Maersk Line, Limited (MLL).
But it was not until 1983 that MLL operations really began, when the company won its first government contract to convert and operate five Maritime Prepositioning Ships (MPS). Since then, MLL has managed and operated more than 110 vessels of varying types and sizes for its customers.
MLL is a business within the A.P. Moller-Maersk Group, one of the world’s largest shipping companies, which engages in a wide range of activities in energy, logistics, retail and manufacturing. MLL’s unique position as a ship owner and operator allows us access to a global network and some of the latest innovations in the transportation industry.

5.0 NAME OF INFORMATION SYSTEM

World’s largest ocean carrier will now support full spectrum of paperless electronic transactions with shippers on GT Nexus

GT Nexus today announced that Maersk Line, the world’s largest ocean container shipping company, has contracted with GT Nexus to provide Maersk Line’s customers with advanced e-commerce capabilities. Maersk Line has integrated its back office systems with the GT Nexus cloud supply chain platform, enabling Maersk Line to support paperless business transactions with customers who use GT Nexus.

6.0 OBJECTIVE OF THE SYSTEM

“We make every effort to provide our customers with the technology, services and support they need to run efficient, agile global supply chains,” said Danny Danford, Head of eBusiness Integration Solutions at Maersk Line. “A number of our customers use GT Nexus as their core supply chain operating platform and we are able to support them by being a certified carrier on that network.”

7.0 SCOPE OF THE SYSTEM

1. “Maersk Line recognizes that shippers put a premium on advanced technology and expect their carriers to support them on the solution of their choice,” said John Urban, president of GT Nexus. “Customers are working to simplify their interactions with partners through automation. Maersk Line is now part of our network, and we welcome them to our growing community of providers.”
2. GT Nexus and Maersk Line have worked together for several years in support of supply chain visibility and service contracting initiatives with shippers and 3PLs that are on the platform. With this change, users of GT Nexus also have the ability to exchange electronic bookings and bill of lading instructions directly with Maersk Line. As the world’s most reliable container line, Maersk Line will have the ability to differentiate on the information timeliness and quality within the Supply Chain Management components of the GT Nexus product suite.

8.0 THE USER OF THE SYSTEM

The GT Nexus cloud supply chain platform is used by the world’s leading companies to manage inventory and shipment flows across their partner networks as well as to execute transactions with their transport carriers, which drives scale and cost effectiveness. Carriers such as Maersk Line integrate to GT Nexus once and can then use that single standardized interface to exchange business information with thousands of other customers on the platform

9.0 THE USER INTERFACE

9.1 OBJECTIVE AND FUNCTION

1. We will consistently adopt best practices in recruiting and training Qataris to provide unparalleled career opportunities, in-line with our core values.
2. To provide unpatrolled, long-term career and development opportunities across the organization
3. To work with organization learning institutions to address industry learning needs together.

10.0 HOW THE INFORMATION SYSTEM SUPPORT BUSINESS

Maersk Line’s global customers are now able to coordinate all of their container transportation activities through GT Nexus, the cloud-based software provider that links shippers, logistics providers and ocean and surface carriers.

Over the last three months, Maersk Line has integrated its back-office systems with the GT Nexus cloud supply chain platform, where shippers that use it can coordinate the booking, tracking and payment for the transport of containers with their supply chain partners around the globe.

The decision by one of the founding carrier members of the competing e-portal, INTTRA, marks a significant shift in its ability to collaborate electronically with its customers and third-party logistics providers, as well as other members of the supply chain.

It follows up on the intention voiced by former Maersk CEO Eivind Kolding to make booking a container with it as easy as buying a book on Amazon.com.

“It will allow all of our customers to transact with Maersk much more effectively electronically for booking and shipping instructions,” said John Urban, president and co-founder of GT Nexus. “We’ve always had connectivity to Maersk for container status events to drive visibility. Their decision to become a member of GT Nexus will enable us to strengthen and harden those electronic integrations.”

Danny Danford, head of eBusiness Integration Solutions at Maersk Line, said a number of customers use GT Nexus as their core supply chain operating platform, and, “We are able to support them by being a certified carrier on that network.”

By integrating its back-office IT systems with GT Nexus, Maersk enables customers to book containers and shipping instructions directly with it or through 3PLs such as DHL and UPS that have embedded their supply chain offerings in the cloud platform.

The visibility across the whole platform is enhanced as they move into giving shipping instructions. Now shippers can tie that whole document process into their letters of credit or their payment processes with their banks, because shipping instructions are key documents in getting trade finance. “They get a better result in managing not just their physical supply chain but their financial supply chain as well,” Urban said.

The GT Nexus platform also gives Maersk shippers a strategic overview of their transactions. “When you begin to look at automating booking and shipping instructions, they become very strategic in those supply chain deployments, because they allow you to take visibility all the way back to the planning stage when you are just booking the shipment as opposed to waiting for it to hit the water,” Urban said. “It provides for a lot more knowledge about how your supply chain is operating.”

11.0 RECOMMENDATIONS TO IMPROVE INFORMATION SYSTEM
1. Develop a Technology Usage Agreement for your staff. Include compliance issues such as inappropriate web surfing, data or music downloading policy and data confidentiality. Prohibit visiting website categories known to house viruses such as torrent sites, gambling and file sharing sites.
2. Create a comprehensive technology plan. This plan should address systematic replacement of aging workstations and ways to evaluate emerging technologies. It should provide a basic map of how your information system will run today and in the future taking in account the rapidly changing nature of the industry.
3. Contact your Internet Service Provider to investigate increasing your bandwidth. Often increasing bandwidth makes multitasking much easier and reduces application hang-ups caused by slow updating. Consider ISP redundancy if you have repeated downtime from your primary carrier.
4. Consult with one of the many firms who provide off-site storage for your key documents and databases. This service is typically easy to install and provides you with easy disaster recovery should you have a major system issue or virus.
5. Consider "software as a service" options for functions such as word processing, email and customer relationship management. This service provides web-based versions of solutions you typically install on each workstation. The service makes data more available throughout your shop and at your home.
6. Utilize free software to free up your technology budget to upgrade machines faster. Many companies such as Google, Sun and Adobe add free services entice customers to remain brand-loyal.
7. Schedule periodic maintenance downtime. Your Information Technologies employee or company should manage updates, scan for viruses and examine error logs during this scheduled downtime to prevent data loss or system outages.
